Is my money locked up?

Not entirely, and never all of it. A guaranteed income strategy is designed to cover a defined portion of your savings — the part funding expenses you cannot afford to miss. The remainder stays liquid and invested. Contracts that provide lifetime income do include access provisions and limits, and those terms vary considerably. Any restriction that would apply to you is stated in writing, in plain language, before you decide anything.

What happens to my money when I die?

That depends on how the strategy is structured, and it is a decision you make rather than one made for you. Arrangements can be structured to continue payments to a surviving spouse, to pay a remaining balance to named beneficiaries, or to maximize income during your lifetime instead. Each choice has a cost and a benefit. We work through them explicitly before anything is put in place.

How is this different from investing?

Investing exchanges risk for the possibility of return. A guaranteed income strategy does something different: it transfers a specific risk — the risk of outliving your money, or of a badly timed downturn — to an insurance company that takes on a contractual obligation to keep paying you. It is not a substitute for an investment portfolio and is not intended to outperform one. It sits alongside it, doing a job a portfolio cannot do on its own.

Is this safe?

Guarantees are contractual obligations of the issuing insurance company, backed by that company's financial strength and claims-paying ability. Insurers are regulated at the state level, subject to reserve and capital requirements, and independently rated. We review the strength and ratings of any issuer under consideration together, and states additionally maintain guaranty associations, with coverage limits that vary by state.

The initial review and income analysis are complimentary — there is no fee and no obligation. If a strategy is implemented, any internal costs, fees, or spreads within the contract are disclosed to you in writing before you sign, along with how I am compensated. You will not encounter a cost you were not shown in advance.

How do I know if this is right for me?

It is generally most relevant to households within roughly ten years of retirement who have accumulated meaningful savings and want a portion of their income insulated from market outcomes. It is often not the right answer for people with substantial guaranteed pension income already, very short time horizons, or liquidity needs that outweigh income certainty. An honest review sometimes concludes that no change is warranted, and that is a legitimate outcome.
